Oliver-
Whenever I don’t feel inspired to
write I read the blog my parents made about cooking their way through the woods
to a food cooking book. Today I did this and realized how far I have to go before
I can write like them, still giving up probably won’t help much. Anyway, the
connection here is that they came and visited this past weekend which was very
nice. They even got Henry to come with them, which is difficult to do because
he is so committed to his work. They picked me up right after work and we drove
down to the Tetons where we camped at Colter Bay. My mom made pasta and a salad
which was very good and very difficult to clean off the dishes. The next day we
hiked up Granite Canyon with the ambition to backpack at Marion Lake. The hike
was pretty but not easy and by the time we made it to the lake, we had gone a
couple miles more than we thought it was and it was about dinner time.
Unfortunately for my appetite, the lake turned out to be a less-than-ideal
campsite, much of the area was covered and snow, and where the snow had melted it
was muddy. This combined with it being very cold sent us back down the mountain
where we planned on camping at a site we had passed earlier in the day. Despite
how tired and hungry we all were the hike back down was easier than the hike up
and we were able to beat the setting sun, phew. The next day I hiked all the
way back to the trailhead, met Opal, and hiked significantly less far back up
the trail where we set up camp for the second night. While we waited for my
family to get to the campsite I ‘swam’ in the very cold river. Eventually, they arrived and we had a much more relaxing evening than the night before. On
the way out the next day, we all got brunch (ice cream) in Jackson Hole before
saying our goodbyes. It was a lovely weekend and I appreciate them making the
long drive.
